Here's what we check during a maintenance visit:
Panel condition and output
Cracks, deep dents, scorch marks, and cell discolouration are all signs of damage that reduce output and can worsen over time. We check each panel visually and compare production data to expected output for the system size and sun conditions.
Snow, debris, and soiling
Manitoba's climate means heavy snow loads in winter and dust, pollen, and bird droppings through summer. In most cases rainfall handles the cleaning, but panels that sit at a low tilt angle or under trees can accumulate enough debris to noticeably reduce production. Inverters and charge controllers log fault codes and performance data that tells you a lot about system health. We pull that data, check for error history, and verify everything is operating within normal parameters.
Battery bank condition (off-grid systems)
For off-grid systems we check battery state of health, voltage balance between cells, and whether the bank is holding capacity the way it should. Lithium batteries degrade slowly and predictably, but catching a failing cell bank early is a lot cheaper than replacing it after a complete failure.
Mounting and racking
Hardware loosens over time from thermal expansion and wind load. We check that panels are secured properly and that mounting points haven't corroded or shifted.
How often should you get a maintenance inspection?
Once a year is enough for most grid-tied residential systems. Off-grid systems, particularly those running year-round in remote locations, benefit from an inspection before winter and again in spring when the heavy production season starts.
If your system is more than 5 years old and you've never had it looked at, it's worth booking an inspection regardless of whether you're seeing issues. Production can drop gradually enough that you don't notice until something finally flags on the monitoring system.
